Armacell is the successor company to the former insulation products division of Armstrong World Industries and was founded in June 2000 as a management buyout. As an independent company with financially strong investors Armacell has been expanding into new markets since 2000. Apart from strengthening its position in the market for insulation materials - here Armacell is the world leader in the flexible technical insulation sector - the company set up a new division which manufactures and markets foam plastics for a wide variety of applications.

In 2007, Armacell found a new financial partner for its growth-oriented business strategy in the internationally active investment group Investcorp. Members of the Armacell management team are joint owners of the globally positioned company. Armacell International Holding GmbH, the holding organization for companies and sales offices operating worldwide, is based in Münster, Germany. Today, Armacell has around 2,440 employees and produces at 19 plants in 13 countries on four continents. In 2011, the company had a gross annual turnover of 448 million euros. With production facilities in China, Thailand, India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia Armacell was able to open up new geographical markets early on. In markets where Armacell does not have its own factories, sales offices and distributors complete a sales network which is unique in this line of business. In Germany, Armacell produces at two locations: in Münster, with 640 employees the largest production facility worldwide, and in Friesenhofen (Allgäu).

Half a century ago, when the company invented the first flexible insulation product Armaflex, it founded a new branch of industry, flexible technical insulation, which it has been shaping ever since. Armaflex is now the world’s best-known brand for flexible pipe insulation and the brand name has developed into a genericized trademark throughout the world. The company has contributed greatly to the professionalization of this line of business and as a technology leader has set industry standards throughout the world. Almost all significant innovations in the field of flexible technical insulation materials have come from Armacell. Apart from the classic thermal insulation materials for warm and cold applications, Armacell today also offers a wide range of covering systems, fire protection and noise control solutions, pre-insulated pipes, special insulation systems for applications in industry and appropriate accessories. Against the backdrop of rising energy prices, stricter energy-saving laws and the rapid pace of climate change, the insulation of building equipment and industrial installations will play an even more important role in the future. An important growth market for Armacell is the global oil and gas business which is now served by a separate international team.

Armacell also uses its more than 50 years of experience in foam technology for innovative, new products in other fields of application. Technical foams made by Armacell are used in the automotive, construction and electronic industries amongst others. Furthermore, in the Technical Foam division PET foam cores are manufactured, which are used in shipbuilding, transport and the construction of wind turbines as composite materials. The business units have a stimulating effect on each other: customers of both divisions benefit from optimizations in production technology, new types of rubber and an extended product portfolio.
